About WCPA
The IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) is the world’s leading network of protected area experts, with more than 2,500 members across 140 countries. For over 60 years, WCPA has been at the forefront of global action on protected and conserved areas. Its mission is to develop and provide scientific, technical, and policy advice and to advocate for global and national systems of marine, freshwater, and terrestrial protected areas and other effective area-based conservation measures (OECMs) that achieve successful outcomes for biodiversity conservation, grounded in sound design, good management, and equitable governance. WCPA advances this mission by advising policymakers, strengthening capacity and investment, and convening diverse stakeholders to address conservation challenges.

Within this global network, members contribute through regions, task forces, specialist groups, and publications, as well as youth forums that support future leaders. The Urban Conservation Strategies Specialist Group is one of these groups, working to define, promote, and guide urban protected and conserved areas. By connecting cities and nature, our work complements WCPA’s mission and highlights the vital role of urban areas in conserving biodiversity. Learn how you can join us below.
