Opened in 2017, Chulalongkorn Centenary Park is 11 acres of urban green space located in central Bangkok, Thailand. Designed by the landscape architecture firm LANDPROCESS, the park was developed through a collaboration between Chulalongkorn University and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration. The project integrates innovative water management systems, recreational spaces, and green infrastructure to strengthen urban resilience against flooding and heat stress in one of Southeast Asia’s densest cities
Contribution to Urban Conservation
Chulalongkorn Centenary Park plays a critical role in demonstrating how urban green spaces can enhance climate resilience and biodiversity within compact city environments. The park features a sloped design that channels stormwater into constructed wetlands and underground cisterns, capturing up to one million gallons of rainwater during heavy storms. Native plantings, green roofs, and multifunctional open spaces improve air quality, mitigate urban heat island effects, and provide habitat for pollinators and small wildlife.
Beyond its ecological functions, the park addresses urgent urban challenges by offering equitable public access to green space in an area previously underserved by parks. It serves as a high-profile model of nature-based solutions for Southeast Asian cities facing increasing flood risk and climate pressures.
